send this to a friendThe gila monster is one of only two venomous lizards in the world. This 12" to 18" lizard lives in the Sonoran Desert in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It carries the most potent venom among reptiles in the region and yet moves so slowly and awkwardly, it rarely uses it. Those who have lived in the Southwest for a long duration of time remember, vividly, the moment when they first came across the large black and orange beaded lizard as if it were a landmark event in their lives. It is extremely rare to see a gila monster in nature because the lizard is able to spend most of its time underground storing nourishment as fat in its heavy tail. Gilas surface briefly, perhaps, to feast on quail eggs or to quench their thirst after a summer thunderstorm. Our Gila Monster print pays homage to this endangered desert dweller.
