278 Prickly Paisley

A subtle and often taken for granted symbolic motif in fashion is paisley, named after a town in central Scotland. The ancient pattern itself, however, is perennial and can be found on every continent, in some form or another. Being associated with the leaves of certain plants, it can symbolize the cosmos itself, as in Persian tradition, where the ?paisley? shaped leaves of the cypress tree represent life and eternity. Also, the paisley shape resembles one-half of the popular yin-yang symbol from Chinese Daoism. "Prickly Paisley" is an adaptation of cacti motifs from the American deserts into paisley form.
